LGBTQ Affirmative Therapy Professional Training

What is LGBTQ Affirmative Therapy?

Affirmative Therapy is an intentionally conscious commitment to working with LGBTQ clients with the understanding that:

LGBTQ clients experience mental health and relationship issues in the context of historical, institutional, and internalized forms of oppression, discrimination and marginalization.

The development of healthy ways of relating to self and other are linked to the development of positive identity by dismantling the effects of internalized shame

Affirmative therapy seeks to empower LGBTQ people in their lives and relationships as they come out; and as they adjust to life cycle challenges and opportunities that have historically only had a heteronormative lens. Affirmative therapists honor the  life cycle events of LGBTQ family systems by creatively working to  address the  conflicts that can arise in families when a loved one comes out.

Affirmative therapists are intentional in their commitment to LGBTQ inclusivity and sensitivity in providing services that do not require the client to educate them about gender, sexuality, identity. Affirmative therapists honor the self understanding and language of the client.
